Downtown Calexico’s port of entry is one of the busiest ports in the nation with an estimated 20,000 pedestrians crossing the border daily into Imperial Valley from Mexico to work, attend school or shop. The number of crossers at the downtown POE is projected to increase with the planned expansion of the international border crossing. Many of those crossers use public transportation to access their final destination and it is anticipated that a new, conveniently located transportation center will better accommodate existing and projected rider demand. Additionally, it is also expected that a new facility will better serve local riders as well and potentially relieve traffic congestion in the downtown area. A feasibility study began in 2013 in partnership with Caltrans, SCAG and the City of Calexico, and was finalized on October 23, 2014 and approved and adopted by the ICTC Commission and the Calexico City Council.
