Calexico East Port of Entry Intermodal Transportation Center
Overview
ICTC was awarded $12.6 Million from the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) through its Transit Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP) to design and construct a transit facility at the Calexico East Port of Entry (POE)
Goals
Key components of the project include:
Shelter and Shade Structures: To protect travelers from extreme heat conditions.
Seating and Bicycle Parking: To enhance comfort and convenience for pedestrians and cyclists.
Bilingual Signs and Travel Guidance: To provide clear directions and information for all users.
Designated Bus Stops: To facilitate efficient and organized public transit operations.
Environmentally Friendly Design Elements: Including solar LED lighting and drought-resistant landscaping to minimize the carbon footprint and promote ecological stewardship.
Project Benefits
Enhanced Mobility and Accessibility: By providing a centralized transit hub, the project will improve mobility options for residents, commuters, and visitors, facilitating seamless connectivity and ease of transfer between different modes of transportation.
Sustainable Transportation: The project promotes the use of public transit and cycling, reducing reliance on individual vehicles, thereby mitigating harmful emissions and contributing to climate change goals.
Community Support and Engagement: The development of the transportation center has involved extensive stakeholder engagement, ensuring that the facility meets the diverse needs of the community it serves.
Improved Safety and Comfort: The provision of shelter and shade structures, seating, and clear signage will enhance the safety and comfort of travelers, particularly during extreme weather conditions.
Economic and Social Benefits: By improving transportation infrastructure, the project will support economic development in the region and enhance the quality of life for community members.
Project Timeline and Phases
Planning Phase: Completion of Planning Specification and Estimates (PS&E), including environmental clearance by 2027.
Right-of-Way Acquisition: Right-of-way acquisition for the project site by 2025.
Construction Phase: An estimated completion date in 2030.
